What Are Xeomin® Injections?
Xeomin® is a special, FDA-approved form of botulism toxin that, when injected into the muscles of the face, can help to freeze them and smooth out moderate to severe lines and wrinkles, albeit temporarily. The Xeomin® injection procedure is most commonly used for treating glabellar lines, or the frown lines that develop between the eyebrows and lead up to the forehead.
Over time, patients who regularly receive Botox® injection treatment can start to build something of an immunity, and begin to see a decline in their results. Xeomin® is a great alternative that many choose to switch to when Botox® seems to no longer be doing the trick. Xeomin® is also more affordable than Botox® and delivers comparable results.
In essence, the same ingredients of both Botox® and Dysport® are found in Xeomin®, only Xeomin® is a more pure form of the toxin.
While it’s a botulinum toxin type A injectable just like Botox®, Xeomin® has fewer additional proteins, which can be good for patients who have started to develop a Botox® resistance. There are no discernable differences to the results of Xeomin® injections when compared to Botox®, although Xeomin® is usually a little less expensive.

What Does Xeomin® Treat?
Typically, Xeomin® is used to treat wrinkles and fine lines in the forehead, usually the fine frown lines located between the eyebrows. Xeomin® isn't a dermal filler like Restylane® or Juvéderm®; it won't fill in deep wrinkles or depressions. It will only treat dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle contractions.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Xeomin®?
Xeomin® is made without complex proteins, so it makes a good alternative for those who feel that Botox® or Dysport® just don't have the same kick as before. It is possible for people to build something of an immunity to Botox® over time, and this is caused by the proteins coating the active part of the neurotoxin chemicals. Due to the lack of any additional proteins, it’s far less likely that a patient will be able to develop any resistance to Xeomin®.
After a recent double blind study compared Xeomin® injections with Botox®, neither doctors nor patients could discern any difference between the end results, although some patients mentioned that there was less of a feeling of tightness with the Xeomin®.
If you are bothered by the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, you may be a good candidate for Xeomin®, even if Botox® did not work well for you.
How Long will Xeomin® Results Last?
As with other neurotoxin injections, the results of the Xeomin® injections can last for as long as up to three to four months.
One additional benefit of Xeomin® over Botox® and Dysport®, though, is that patients who’ve undergone the treatment often claim that the effects start to be noticed much quicker than with the alternatives, which can take anywhere from one day to 10 days to become apparent. The average time for Xeomin® to show results is three to four days, although it can take up to a month for patients to see the full results of the treatment.
